• Anxiety and irritability – because you are denying your body something it wants, you can except to be irritable. Sometimes quitting smoking is easier for people if they can take a few days by themselves to go “cold turkey” and stop smoking completely. This can lead to a weight problem. Weight gain can also occur as the result of fluid retention. Surprisingly, the way to combat this is to drink a lot of water because this will flush out your body and don’t eat a lot of salt because this will absorb water.

• Acid reflux and gas – fortunately these are both temporary and often don’t last more than a few weeks. Try over the counter medications to help combat this and avoid foods that will exacerbate it.

• Sinus congestion, coughing and hoarseness – this occurs because your body is getting rid of all the tar and other debris that come from smoking. These problems can last a little longer and sometimes go on for a few months. Again, try general medications to help with the side effects.

• Insomnia and Weird Dreams – as you quit your body will start entering REM sleep more often. When you’re smoking you actually don’t get very good sleep. However, if you aren’t used to the REM sleep cycle it can feel like you aren’t really sleeping for a while. You can also experience strange or more frequent dreams. This is connected to the increased REM sleep because that is when you dream. If you are having trouble falling asleep, you can try sleep aids, but make sure to be careful as some of them are addictive as well. Eventually, you will get used to this.

• Itchiness and tingling – this occurs in some people because your circulation improves after quitting. It shouldn’t last for more than a few days.

If you do decide to quit smoking, it’s always a good idea to consult with your doctor. He or she can help advise you on what sort of medications or patches you can use to help with the process. Even though the quit smoking side effects can be very challenging and annoying at times, giving up smoking will help you to improve your quality of life, your health, and the health of those around you.

Every once in a while most smokers think about all the harmful things that will happen to them if they continue to smoke in an effort to push themselves to quit. Rather than thinking about the , they focus on the costs of continuing to smoke. If you are one of them, then hopefully I will be able to talk you out of it because I believe that you’re doing yourself a disservice by looking at smoking from this perspective.

Think only about the quit smoking benefits and you will have a greater chance of quitting.

I have recently explored a lot of facets of negative thinking, and when it comes to smoking it can be one of the biggest barriers to quitting. Contrary to the common definition of this phrase, I consider all thoughts that focus on anything negative to be “negative thinking”. In the case of smoking cigarettes, I see it as every time you try to scare yourself into quitting by thinking of all the bad things that can happen if you don’t.

A great many self-help and NLP experts talk about your subconscious mind, and how what you think logically often does not correspond with to how you feel. And how you feel is a result of your subconscious mind, and what has been brought to its attention.

I believe that the subconscious mind has far more power than the conscious, or logical mind, when it comes to quitting smoking regardless of which method you choose to try to aid you to quit. I say this because it is able to influence your emotions and your feelings, the basis that most people use to make decisions.

In the area of understanding how the mind works, it is generally believed that the more time you spend thinking about something with your conscious, logical mind, the more importance your subconscious mind attributes to that thought. This is why many NLP experts do not recommend using words such as “not”, “can’t” or “won’t” when thinking about things that are very important to you. In other words, the more time you spend thinking about all the negative things that will happen if you don’t quit smoking, the more importance your subconscious mind will give those thoughts.

You might say, “great! I’ll really find it important now on an unconscious level!” but that’s rarely the case with this approach. What will most likely actually happen, is that you will stun your logical mind and your decision-making capacity into inaction, you will become afraid to try to quit, and you will think that they are just as many reasons to continue smoking (spurred by your negative thoughts) as there are to quit.

Since I’m assuming this is the opposite of your goal, I encourage smokers trying to quit to spend more time focusing on the positive things and quit smoking benefits – and not pursue her thoughts that lead to fear. Anything that scares you, though it can’t be ignored, can be acknowledged – and you can move on to happier thoughts.

While I do not pretend to be an expert in the field of smoking cessation and they do not know whether this approach will work for everyone, I can say that it has greatly helped me when I quit smoking. Given the number of attempts I have had before I was successful, I will say that positive thinking was a very large influence in my final, successful attempt, as well as the successful attempt of some of my colleagues.
